Screens Are a Tool—But They’re Not the Only One

Let’s be real—screens can be lifesavers. Sometimes, you just need a moment to get things done, and that’s okay! But there are also times when you don’t want to rely on a screen to keep your kids occupied. Maybe you’re out and about, maybe you want to encourage creative play, or maybe you just don’t feel like dealing with another episode of whatever show they’re obsessed with this week.
That’s where having a few go-to screen-free activities comes in handy. Here are my top five favorite no-screen toys that actually keep kids busy:
This little camera may look simple, but it’s a game-changer! My kids love pretending to take pictures on nature walks, around the house, or even of their toys. It keeps them engaged and gives me a break—without a screen in sight.
Endless fun with no mess! These books let kids move stickers around and create different scenes over and over again. Perfect for restaurants, car rides, or quiet time at home. (Link here)
A magic coloring book that only requires water? Yes, please! These books are reusable and keep little hands busy without any actual paint or markers involved. (Link here)
4. Building Blocks or Magnetic Tiles
Whether it’s classic LEGO bricks or magnetic tiles, open-ended building toys are a great way to encourage creativity and keep kids entertained for long stretches. If you are planning on traveling with these, make sure you invest in a proper travel container that they can use AND store it.
5. Kinetic Sand or Play Dough
A little messy? Yes. But if you set it up on a tray or a contained space, kinetic sand or play dough can keep kids focused and busy for a long time. Plus, it’s a great sensory activity!
Final Thoughts
Screens have their place, but they’re not the only way to entertain kids. Having a few reliable, no-screen-time toys on hand makes it easy to keep them engaged—whether you’re at home or on the go.
